Bad news for Gilbert (and all the rest of us)

Our dog, Gilbert, has advanced malignant lymphoma. No telling how long he has left, but probably weeks rather than months. I think we're going to pass on all the heroic options and just let him wind down gracefully, spending as much time as possible in the arms of my young son, who absolutely adores him. Pardon me if I don't say anything clever today. Perhaps some pictures later tonight.

Oh, I'm sorry. Poor old beast... Will you be able to ensure he's not having pain?

Thanks Kate and Mary.

Yes, we'll keep a close eye on him and do what needs to be done when he's not getting anything more from his little life. He still greets every morning with a wagging tail and even appears to enjoy the overweening attentions of our young son. Apparently, the disease itself causes very little pain until close to the end.
